OpenOcean — data sources, attributions and licences
Effective date: 20 October 2026
OpenOcean is built on data from public agencies, open projects and licensed providers. This page credits them and states the licence each one is used under. None of these sources, and nothing derived from them in OpenOcean, is for navigation — see our Terms, section 1. Where a source requires a specific form of words, it appears here verbatim.

- Observed rain and lightning — Rain &
Lightning's past two hours are ground radar where it reaches and a satellite rain-rate blend
everywhere else, with lightning flashes at the present time. The app credits every source in
the feed with the line in italics, verbatim:
- NOAA / NESDIS — Enterprise Rain Rate global blend — satellite rain rate, 70°N–60°S. Satellite rain rate: NOAA/NESDIS Enterprise Rain Rate global blend (from GOES, Himawari and Meteosat imagery), via NOAA Open Data Dissemination, modified by OpenOcean. Public domain (U.S. Government; NOAA's NCEI lists the product as CC0). NOAA requests attribution and does not endorse OpenOcean.

Forecast fields are re-processed into map tiles by OpenOcean; the age of every field is shown in the app. Model output is not a measurement.
Vessel traffic (AIS)
- AIS positions come from shore-based receiver networks, merged and relayed through OpenOcean's servers: the aisstream.io community network, and Open Waters aiscast (ais.openwaters.io), which re-serves open government feeds and volunteer receivers under each source's own terms. Coverage is terrestrial only (no satellite), incomplete, and can be delayed. Not for collision avoidance.
- Contains data under the Norwegian licence for Open Government data (NLOD) distributed by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Data delivered by BarentsWatch.
- Source: Fintraffic / digitraffic.fi, license CC 4.0 BY.
- AIS data from AISHub and volunteer receivers (CC0), via Open Waters.
- The MMSI of a private leisure craft can identify its owner. If that is your boat and you do not want it shown, see the Privacy Policy for how to have it removed.
